Alternative Medicine Books about alternative health

What is alternative medicine?

Alternative medicine broadly describes methods and practices used in place of, or in addition to, conventional medical treatments. The precise scope of alternative medicine is a matter of some debate and depends to a great extent on the definition of "conventional medicine."

The debate on alternative medicine is complicated further by the diversity of treatments that are categorized as "alternative." These include practices that incorporate spiritual, metaphysical, or religious underpinnings; non-European medical traditions; newly developed approaches to healing; and a number of others. Proponents of one class of alternative medicine may reject others.

Detractors from alternative medicine may also define it as "diagnosis, treatment, or therapy which can be provided legally by persons who are not licensed to diagnose and treat illness", although some medical doctor find value using alternative therapies in the practice of "complementary medicine".

Many in the scientific community define alternative medicine as any treatment, the efficacy and safety of which has not been verified through peer-reviewed, controlled studies.

The boundaries of alternative medicine have changed over time as a number of techniques and therapies once considered to be "alternative" have been accepted by mainstream medicine.

Reviews:

Great RX for Health
I found the most significant contribution of this book to be the thorough explanations of which foods are the most beneficial. Especially the list of foods with highest ORAC (antioxidant) scores. Also the Superfoods list is very helpful.

Chapter 5: "The Spices" was a suprise. This was the first health book (I've read quite a few) that gave such attention to the incredible health benefits of these common spices.

The Supplements information is also priceless. Although I found it a bit confusing as to how to create an optimal regimen that does not require popping 40 pills per day. I have narrowed down the supplements I used based on my overall education on the topic from this and other books: CoQ10, Alpha-Lipoic-Acid, Fish oil capsules, Coral Calcium and a Comprehesive Multi, in addition to the herbs/spices Turmeric, Ginger Root, Fenugreek, Cayenne, Gingko Biloba.

After reading this book there will be a major temptation to incorporate all the supplements he advocates, however after lots of internet research I found that for some there just is not any evidence they will have measureable results (Carnitine, L-Tyrpsine, Carnosine, Acetyl-L-Carnitine). Plus, I think you have to be careful not to overload your kidneys.

The Topicals Section is mainly just advertising for Dr. Perricones pricey product line. I leave this off my regime entirely, its the most expensive with the least effect. What you put in your mouth will have a much greater impact on your skin and health than anything applied topically. Neverthless, Pilgrim's Pride does have a much less expensive ALA/C-Ester/DMAE cream than his. It's called "Wrinkle Raiders Cream".

(...) If you're paying retail for your supplements (like in a health food or vitamin store) you are paying 2 to 3 times too much! Pilgrim's Pride is certified GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) which is as close as you'll come to an industry-wide quality control assurance.
Great Book
Finally, a medical Doctor advising that diet and lifestyle is a possible answer to health problems instead of pills and surgery! Great information.
My eating bible
I became a fan of Dr. Perricone once I read one of his books by chance in a bookstore. I couldn't believe that eating right could prevent one from having a face lift. I have always been very concious of what I eat but after reading "The Perricone Promise" I just removed from my diet certain kind of food and eat a lot more of what he recommends in his book. The book is understandable and easy to read. The recepies included in the book are very good and easy to make. I call this book "my eating bible" as I refer to it when in doubt. I recommend it to anyone who wants to lead a healthier lifestyle and have younger looking skin.
Best Buy

I became interested in Dr. Perricone theory once I saw him on PBS over a year ago. He was convincing enough to make me, old sceptic, get his book and follow his advice... I recommend "The Perricone Promise" to anyone who wants to lead a healthier lifestyle and have younger looking skin. It is actually a continuation of the idea presented in his previous book "Perricone Prescription".

Dr. Perricone has an easy-to-read writing style. In addition, the book is not only informative but also inspiring. Both in the content and in the style Dr. Perricone reminds me of Dr. Tombak, whose popular book "Can We Live 150 Year" turned my life around, and made me pay close attention to what and how I eat, how I breathe, how I think, and how I live in general.

I keep both titles as my reference books. Although I know all the simple ideas presented by Tombak, I always get new motivation to improve my well-being whenever I read that book again... Same with Dr. Perricone - I reach for his book to complement on things that I am missing in the other volume, such as, for example, good information on supplements. I find a bundle of Perricone and Tombak a very good combination as they complement each other.
